Supporters go Over the Top for Tots!
On November 8, Crisis Nurseries of St. Charles raised more than $80,000 at its 8th Annual Over the Top for Tots luncheon. The event, held at The Columns Banquet Center, benefitted the agency’s three 24-hour St. Charles area Nurseries and its Healing Heartsprogram, which this year provided art therapy for 412 children who needed help mending their broken spirits.
There were many enthralling surprises to keep 500 guests entertained and updated on the Nursery’s profound impact on at-risk children and families. Most sentimental was a $5,000 check presentation by Arthur and Ruthie Schaper in honor of their beloved son, Aaron Schaper, a former Crisis Nursery advisory board member. Becky Hoskins, retiring executive director of Lincoln County Resource Board (LCRB), received a lifetime achievement award for her many years of service and collaboration with Crisis Nursery Wentzville.
Crisis Nursery Chief Executive Officer DiAnne Mueller explained that under Becky’s phenomenal leadership, LCRB, the 2013 Guardian Angel Awardee, funded essential supportive services to help families create long-term stability, further preventing out-of-home placements and future crises.
“The Crisis Nursery is the only provider of child abuse prevention services in Lincoln County; it is crucial that we maintain the availability of respite care for our families,” said Hoskins.
The 2013 Children’s Champion Award was presented to the Wentzville Community Club (WCC), who this year celebrates its 80th anniversary. Mueller said WCC was one of the first to provide financial support to the Wentzville Nursery.
“We are just everyday people, proudly helping Crisis Nursery save at-risk children and families who have nowhere else to turn and are in crises,” explained Diane Ransom, WCC board president.
“Over the Top for Tots” was hosted by KMOV’s Claire Kellett and Andre Hepkins. It featured an elaborate lunch, boutique shopping, high-end LIVE and silent auctions and 60 raffle baskets. Sarah Corrigan of The White Hare won first place in the Tabletop Centerpiece Competition judged by Tom Hannegan, Kathy Helbig, and Melissa Calvaruso. Heidi Sowatsky of Interiors by Decorating Den and Aly’s earned second- and third-place, respectively.
Taking home LIVE auction packages were: Wendy Dyer (Palm Spring, CA getaway); Sabrina Wicker of Kelly Services (Fort Meyers, FL getaway); and Linda Gerhardt (Dinner at the Firehouse). Carissa Rupp, wife of Senator Scott Rupp, won a special visit by Santa Claus.
Crisis Nursery is a not-for-profit offering 24-hour, short-term care for children, birth through age 12, keeping them safe when their families are experiencing a crisis, such as overwhelming parental stress, domestic violence, and illness. St. Charles County is home to three Nurseries: Crisis Nursery St. Charles, sponsored by SSM St. Joseph Health Center; and Crisis Nursery West and Crisis Nursery Wentzville, sponsored by The Community and Children’s Resource Board. Crisis Nurseries of St. Charles has provided more than 87,000 hours of around the clock respite care, served close to 16,000 meals and changed over 7,000 diapers, providing safety to thousands of precious little girls and boys.
